ART EXHIBITION ~ TAISPEÁNTAS EALAÍNE

The pupils of Cheathrú Thaidhg primary school ~ Daltaí ó Scoil Náisiúnta  Cheathrú Thaidhg

County Mayo, Ireland ~  Contae Mhaigh Eo, Éire

“Nature’s Call – Dordán Dúlra” leads in to the 2013 St Patrick’s Day celebrations, with an outdoor art exhibition consisting of artwork based on the theme of nature and the importance of our green and marine environments, by the pupils of Ceathrú Thaidhg primary school in north west County Mayo. All 32 of the children’s drawings are being projected using special lighting onto an outdoor screen at nightfall. In keeping with the environmental theme and the celebration of Ireland’s national feast day, some of the public buildings in Ceathrú Thaidhg such as An Seanscoil (The Old School) will also be lit up in green.

The unique character and beauty of the lands, seas, skyscapes and wildlife within North County Mayo are in joyous evidence in the children’s artwork. You can see them all – in three different ways: in video, with music by Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill; in a downloadable 38-page booklet, in Gaeltacht and English; and in three separate galleries, from ages 5 thru 7, 8 thru 10, and 11 thru 13.

About Ceathrú Thaidhg Primary School

The school was built in 1970 on a site donated by a local resident Máire Uí Ghearbháin. With two dedicated teachers and 31 pupils, this small rural school is located in a Gaeltacht or Irish-speaking community. Even though the population of the area has declined over the years, and as a result the attendance figures have also dropped, the ethos of the school remains the same and pupils receive an excellent education through the medium of Irish. The core subjects include English, Irish, Mathematics, as well as Social, Environmental and Scientific subjects such as Science, History, Geography, Nature Studies, Religion and Visual Arts.  Extra curricular activities are sports orientated. The school has developed an environmental awareness and sustainability programme which includes an organic garden, waste management and recycling initiatives. Pupils are encouraged to consider the environment around them, in a way that they can relate to, and to be aware of their impact on it.
