A Tale of Three Brothers

In Tuscany, Italy, three brothers, Antonio, Bandino and Gianni Lo Franco, have become carbon farmers and turned sustainable farming into a profitable business. Every product from the 600 hectares is organic and the farm is actually absorbing more greenhouse gases than it is emitting. This could be a role model for farmers in the future.

The farm produces more than 60 products, which are harvested a various times throughout the year. An additional 600 hectare forest has been planted to help absorb and offset the greenhouse gas emissions that the farm produces.

According to Antonio, “Organic farming is sustainable model, is also a business model, profitable, replicable. I wish it should be replicated in other places, because you have the satisfaction of making quality products with sustainable farming – reducing CO2 emissions. And we should help cultural change of the people in order to increase organic farming everywhere.”

The Environmental Atlas of Europe is a UNEP-EEA-ESA joint project showcasing communities responding to environmental change across Europe. The films present a series of these inspirational stories about how people are responding to climate change and in so doing, transforming their lives for a more sustainable future.

Produced by Ace & Ace, Denmark, in cooperation with the European Environment Agency (EEA), United Nations Environment Programme UNEP and the European Space Agency (ESA).

We need more farmers like this. And I am talking about their philosophy, not how cute they are! But being cute is another reason, too.
