Tigers are on the endangered species list

When I was a kid, the word extinction used to send shivers up and down my spine. It still does. How could something be on this planet for thousands, sometimes millions of years, then suddenly disappear. Here today, gone tomorrow. That’s what’s happening to all forms of plants and animals on Earth.

It’s nothing new. Extinction has been happening since the formation of our planet, and is often nature phasing out a species to replace it with something else. The problem is that now extinctions are happening much more frequently and are often caused by human interference. Extinctions can happen when we overhunt, overfish, overharvest, overdevelop, or pollute our environment. These disappearing plants, trees, and animals may hold the secrets to cures for cancer, killer viruses, and other diseases, so we want to keep them around as long as we can.

Let’s slow down the extinction process. We can do this by not supporting companies that exploit our resources, or that spoil our environment. We can also do more to protect those plants and animals that are already endangered. After all, every species should have the chance to “live long and prosper.”
