On Tuesday, the 400-meter wide asteroid known as 2005 YU55 will pass closer to the Earth than the distance between Earth and the Moon.
The asteroid’s closest approach will occur on November 8 at 3:28 p.m. PST (6:28 p.m. EST/1128 UTC), at which time it will be about 201,700 miles (324,600 kilometers) away. The last time an object of this size passed so to Earth was in 1976.
While 2005 YU55 is massive by near-Earth-object standards, it will not affect Earth’s ocean tides or cause any tectonic disruption.
