911natldayofserviceThe 9/11 National Day of Service initiative is organized annually by a coalition of nonprofit organizations and the federal government, with the purpose of encouraging Americans, and others around the world, to voluntarily support charitable causes, perform good deeds and engage in other service activities, in observance of the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

Spearheaded by MyGoodDeed Inc., in partnership with the Corporation for National and Community Service, HandsOn Network, and the National September 11 Memorial and Museum, and others, this year’s events are planned to build momentum for the 10th anniversary of 9/11, next year, when the group hopes to organize the largest expression of charitable service in US history.

“Even nine years later, no other day has the power of 9/11 to inspire people to step forward to help others, and we see interest in this observance growing significantly throughout the nation,” stated MyGoodDeed VP and co-founder Jay S. Winuk, who lost his brother Glenn in the 9/11 attacks.

Through its youth programs, the Sierra Club is calling on its members, volunteers, and staff to demonstrate outdoor volunteerism and service on 9/11 as a way to honor and help those who defend and protect our country, communities, and great outdoors spaces everyday. Sierra Club’s “Serve Outdoors” initiative will generate and coordinate hands-on outdoor service projects this September 11, in their continuing efforts to cultivate a strong culture of environmental volunteerism within the blossoming Millennial Generation.

The Sierra Club is hosting 911 outdoor volunteer opportunities such as trail work, community cleanups and tree planting projects, with headliner events in San Francisco, Seattle, Los Angeles and Washington DC.

“We’re all going to go through tragedy, said Michael Brune, Sierra Club Executive Director. “It’s part of what it means to be human. It’s how we respond to tragedy that really defines who we are.”

Across the nation, citizens will come together to represent their highest ideals through service this Saturday. Consider spending contemplative time serving and preserving nature in a private or public way this Saturday, September 11th.
