The Universidad Politecnica de Madrid's Solar-Powered home

This past weekend, the 2009 Solar Decathlon kicked off on the National Mall in Washington, DC.

Hosted by US Department of Energy and open to the public Oct 9-13 and 15-18, the Solar Decathlon is an international collegiate competition in which student teams compete to design, build, and operate highly energy-efficient, completely solar-powered houses.

Teams will be awarded $100,000 over two years to support the Solar Decathlon’s research goal of reducing the cost of solar-powered homes and advancing solar technology. The winner will be announced on October 16th.

Among the goals of the competition are to inspire the next generation of engineers, designers and builders, to promote an integrated “whole building” approach to architectural design and construction, and to raise awareness among the general public.
